General

The objectives of the Short Term Awards are to equip individuals with knowledge, skill and attitude to contribute to their organisation’s priorities, to strengthen organisations and to develop people-to-people links between Indonesians, and between Indonesians and Australians.

In addition to the development of the participants’ competences, Short Term Awards also provide linkages between Indonesians and Australians at individual and organisational level and improve participants’ perception of Australia.

Short Term Awards provide an opportunity for Australia Awards Indonesia to be flexible and responsive to the needs of the organisation or sector Australia Awards is working with. This is especially for senior staff that may have already received a post-graduate qualification or are unable to be released for long-term study. Short Term Awards are usually 2-6 weeks in duration, offered to senior Indonesian decision-makers and influencers to develop new skills, be exposed to Australian counterparts and to apply these learnings within their organisations, professional fields and wider community.

Short Term Award Structure

Short Term Awards include a 3-day pre-award workshop in Indonesia, a Short Term Awards of 2-6 weeks in duration delivered in Australia by a university or training provider and a 3-day post-award/reintegration workshop in Indonesia focusing on the implementation of the Short Course Plans.

Award Project

To ensure that participants apply learnings within their organisations and wider community, participation in Short Term Awards is underpinned by an Award Project methodology. Each participant delivers and implements a personal or group development project. The focus areas of the Projects are determined by the organisations in consultation with the individuals to reflect organisational needs and desired outputs and outcomes.

Quality of Short Term Awards

Consistency of the quality of Short Term Awards delivery is important in order to maintain good reputation of the Australian Awards Indonesian Short Term Awards among Indonesian agencies. Short Term Awards design, implementation team structure and the content of the Short Term Awards is based on on-going consultations between the partner organisation, delivery organisation and Australia Awards Indonesia. One critical aspect of successful course delivery is well-organised pastoral care that helps develop participants’ positive perception of Australia, allows them to focus on the course content and addresses potential risks to participants’ well-being before they eventuate. As an underlying condition for successful Short Term Awards delivery, management and administration is compliance with DFAT policies including cross-cutting issues and risk management.

Monitoring and evaluation of Short Term Awards

Assessment of the effects of the Short Term Awards training has been structured according to Kirkpatrick’s model for training course evaluation, which considers the following four levels:

  • Reaction – what participants thought and felt about the training
  • Learning – the resulting increase in knowledge and/or skills, and change in attitudes
  • Behaviour – transfer of knowledge, skills, and/or attitudes from classroom to the job (change in job behaviour due to training program)
  • Results – Effects on the business or environment resulting from the participants’ performance
